Layer tower is a proposal for a thirty floor residential tower in Nanning, China. We were commissioned to develop a new facade system which incorporate operable laser cut screens for each residential apartment. The facade aimed to provide both solar and privacy mediation to the internal quarters and maintaining an overall variable patterned system. Developing a screen for such a large facade with variability whist preserving adequate lighting for each apartment required some substantial computing. A minimal lighting level for each apartment was defined which in turn indicated the minimum number and size of apertures in the laser cut screen. With this set the pattern of the facade could be shifted whist retaining the required amount of natural lighting in each dwelling. The project is due to begin construction in 2016.
